It’s not quite the buzzsaw like Octo Expansion was as far as difficulty across the board but that was DLC so the challenge spike is understandable. Preferably, you want to reach a happy medium between both for the most satisfying experience, especially given the game’s general audience. The difficulty tends to swing between being either way too easy to being incredibly challenging. The difficulty also feels a bit uneven overall. At the same time, it also feels like it’s caught between the design philosophy of the Splatoon 2 expansion and the old game design, resulting in a less cohesive experience. The campaign also takes a lot of cues from the Octo Expansion DLC. From rolling platforms and wall sections that aren’t easily scaled at first glance, Splatoon 3’s campaign requires you to put your noggin to good use so you can move forward. These include challenging platforming stages that require you to not only be a good shot but also a creative thinker in order to solve the trickier sections. The good news is that the stages themselves provide the same variety that Splatoon campaign lovers know and love. At the same time, I certainly understand that the old mechanic wasn’t everyone’s cup of tea, especially folks who want a more straightforward way to unlock stages. It would’ve been nice if Splatoon 3 was able to maintain the sense of discovery and challenge from the old invisible kettles. While the old overworld from the initial games had a more open exploratory feel to them, especially as you try to figure out where the invisible kettles are, the new Fuzzy Ooze mechanic gives a sense of content gating - kind of like checking a to-do list. I also miss the puzzle elements provided by the invisible kettles. As a result, it doesn’t feel like you’re unlocking a new place even when you enter a new overworld area. You also have a bunch of hidden stuff to find including discs, eggs and other items.Īt the same time, however, all the overworld sites look the same and don’t have the unique characteristics of the old games’ overworld. On one hand, it does make the overworld portion of the game feel new and more expansive. This brings up the question: Is Splatoon 3 getting a bit long in the tooth? Or is the third time still a charm? The Splatoon 3 campaign: Stay a while and listenĬombined with the Octo Expansion-style stage aesthetic, the Fuzzy Ooze mechanic gives Splatoon 3’s overworld sites a different vibe from the first two games.

For longtime players, however, making the series feel new once again is a taller order. This isn’t as big an issue for series newcomers, who are experiencing the series’ fun and unique mechanics for the first time. With two games firmly under its belt, Splatoon is no longer the fresh-faced newcomer on the shooting block. I mean, have you ever seen raw squid that’s been left out in the open for a while? Yeah, exactly.

While the first two entries in the series were certifiably fresh - you can check my review for the original Splatoon as well as our Splatoon 2 review for the full deets - there’s always a risk of things getting stale and funky after they’ve been around for a while.
